3rd Street Garage Seismic Upgrade – City of San Jose – San Jose, CA

AKH was the prime consultant for the seismic upgrade of this city-owned, five-story concrete parking structure in downtown San Jose. It provides over 250,000 sq. ft. of revenue-generating parking, so removal of parking spaces was minimized. Upgrades included the introduction of new five-story shotcrete shear walls and shotcrete-strengthened existing precast concrete shear walls. New foundations are of concrete-filled-steel-pipe-piles and C.I.P. drilled concrete piers with concrete pile caps and grade beams. Selected members received supplemental confinement to increase the structure’s ductility and seismic performance. Equipment access, utility locations and continued use of the garage during construction provided opportunities for numerous creative solutions by the design team. Completed in 2004.
