Teaching Stones

About This Project

Teaching Stones – X: Architecture/Art – San Jose, CA

Created by eight fine-art students at the Academy of Art University, this work was designed as a tribute to Doris Dillon, a teacher in the Almaden Community who was known for her generous spirit and ability to “teach a rock to read.” Sculpted granite boulders etched with various words are supported on concrete cup footings and are scattered around the grassy area amongst the trees. The sitting area is a circular granite and reinforced concrete bench embedded into the grassy slope and opens toward the adjacent Almaden Community Center. Completed in 2007.
